  1. Conduct strategic keyword research based on themes and topics. Successful SEO is all about the long game and the big picture.
  1. Aim for a mix of competitive keywords and “long tail” keywords (i.e. those that are searched for less frequently, but are relatively easier to rank highly for).
  1. Target buyer personas based on what they’re looking for and the problems they need to solve. Don’t just aim for “general customers”.
  1. Optimize your website so that it makes search engine robots and visitors happy (not the former instead of the latter!).

  1. Create original content (e.g. infographics, ebooks, articles, etc.) that your community can easily share across social networks.
  1. Engage influencers who can promote your original content across social media networks, and help boost your brand and reputation.

  1. Track and monitor organic traffic statistics. Go beyond conventional hit counters, and drill deep to find out where visitors are coming from, when they’re visiting, what pages they’re accessing and for how long, and so on.
