As noted by the Houston Chronicle: “All businesses need regular website maintenance to attract and retain customers, maintain search engine rankings and present new information, products and services to the public.”

And so in light of this good advice, we’re pleased to provide you with a comprehensive website maintenance checklist that and will help you maximize your digital property now and for years to come:

WEEKLY WEBSITE MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

  • Check all pages to ensure that there are no loading errors
  • Ensure that all backups are being done and stored appropriately
  • Check for any CMS software and plugin updates
  • Check all forms to ensure they’re working correctly
  • Check for broken or incorrect links
  • Check for any 404 errors
  • Remove any spam comments
  • Confirm that emails from web server are functioning normally (address/resolve if not)

MONTHLY WEBSITE MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

  • Conduct speed tests to ensure that loading times are falling within acceptable/expected ranges
  • Perform a thorough security check and address any issues
  • Evaluate website traffic patterns and compare against prior months to identify trends and compare changes
  • Review local search profile to make sure it’s complete and accurate

QUARTERLY WEBSITE MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

  • Assess website for aspects that can be improved or upgraded (e.g. graphics, layout, etc.)
  • Check meta descriptions and titles, and adjust if necessary
  • Optimize forms to improve completion/conversion rates
  • Evaluate automation to see if any new tasks can be added to improve efficiency and quality
  • Remove unnecessary website extensions
  • Check all company contact information for accuracy (e.g. phone numbers, email addresses, satellite office locations, etc.)
  • Test compatibility for browsers and devices (note: this obviously would have been done when the website was launched, but should be done on an ongoing basis as well)
  • Check for alignment with standards and best practices, such as responsive/mobile, accessibility, CSS, etc.
  • Review uptime logs and confirm that it is 99.9% -- anything less indicates a problem and may require switching web hosts

YEARLY WEBSITE MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST

  • Renew your website domain
  • Review each page on your website (not just front-end or popular pages) for accuracy and relevance
  • Evaluate your website strategy and overall design to determine if a refresh is required
